PUBLIC PROGRAMS

View the calendar for dates associated with the following ongoing public programs.

WESTERN CHRONICLES: New Directions in Regional Jewish Identity
This series explores regional Jewish identity in Northern California, animating the lives and legacies of Jews in the American West.  Invited scholars, archivists and curators consider current issues in the formation and evolution of regional histories and identities.

CONVERSATIONS ON ART
These artist talks, panel discussions, and salons compliment current Magnes exhibitions by digging deeper into the themes illustrated by works in the galleries.  This series approaches the visual arts from multiple perspectives, fostering dialogue about the larger historical, aesthetic and theoretical implications of work.

MUSIC SALON
The riches of the Magnes music collection present the perfect backdrop for this interactive program, centered on dialogue, lecture, and musical sampling.  Musicians and scholars involved in the many Jewish traditions active in the Bay Area lead the audience on a fascinating journey through Jewish sounds.

MUSEUMS DIALOGUES
This series explores the social, cultural and ethical responsibilities of museums in society.  Speakers will highlight new publications, professional developments in the museum field, and case studies that exemplify critical issues likely to inform the next iteration of the Magnes as it prepares to move to its new location in the Downtown Arts District of Berkeley.

TASTE MATTERS
Explores the role of food and drink in Jewish culture through cross-disciplinary presentations offering perspectives from anthropology, history, art, agriculture, and other critical fields, creating a gastronomic portrait of Jews around the world.
