Koret Heritage Lobby
1330 Fillmore Street
San Francisco, CA

Reception: Sunday, July 19, 2009, 4-6PM

After the 1906 earthquake, San Francisco’s Fillmore District, one of the most diverse and vibrant areas in the City, became home to a thriving Jewish community. Eastern- European, often Yiddish-speaking immigrants took root alongside the many other ethnic and religious groups that lived in the Fillmore district. Fillmore and McAllister streets were lined with Jewish-owned restaurants, bakeries, shops, and kosher markets. Three synagogues, a Yiddish Cultural Center, and a Jewish school, helped transform the Fillmore into a hub for orthodox and secular Jewish cultures, Zionist activism and traditional Jewish learning.
