The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life is pleased to announce that two new UC Berkeley courses will be taught on its premises in the course of the Academic Year 2014-2015, integrating its collection in the course offering of the University.

Jewish Nightlife: Poetry, Music, and Ritual Performance

Taught by Dr. Francesco Spagnolo, with Yair Harel, Department of Music

A multidisciplinary exploration of the nexus between the ritual performance of Jewish texts and social changes across Jewish history, including the study of Hebrew poetry, music, and synagogue liturgy in Renaissance Italy, in North Africa, the Middle East, and present-day Israel.

Tracing Emigration and Exile: Jewish Migration in 20th-Century German History and Literature

Taught by Prof. Andrea Sinn, Department of German

An examination of the historical events and personal motivations leading up to and surrounding Jewish migration in 20th-century German history conducted by tracing personal narratives in The Magnes Collection, offering a unique opportunity to gain a better understanding the impact of (forced) migration, while also acquiring and practicing archival research skills.
